Google Vids for instructional designers — what it's good for, what to skip

An honest walkthrough of where Vids is replacing Camtasia/Storyline video for me, and where it falls short.

Google Vids Video AI tools

Status: Draft — I’ll replace this placeholder with the real walkthrough + a short demo video once Parker confirms tone.

What this is

Google Vids landed on my desk as an alternative to Camtasia for quick training explainers and microlearning intros. After a few weeks of using it in real projects, here’s where it’s earned a spot in the stack — and where I still reach for something else.

Where it wins

  • First-draft speed for talking-head + slide walkthroughs
  • Native Workspace access for SMEs to review
  • AI-assisted scripting that actually gets close to usable on pass one

Where it doesn’t

  • Any sequence that needs precise frame-level timing
  • Branching or interactive overlays
  • Accessibility captions at the quality bar I want

What I’m using it for today

Quick-turn intro and outro bumpers, SME interview edits, pilot-program comms videos. Not for anything I’d mount inside a scored course.
